Physicians who specialize in Cardiology are called Cardiologists. Cardiologists take care of patients with diseases of the heart muscle, heart valves, electrical conduction of the heart as well as the great vessels.

Although they do not perform heart surgery, Cardiologists do perform such procedures as stent placement, angiography and angioplasty, and pacemaker placement.

They also interpret echocardiograms and electrocardiograms (EKG’s). In order to become a cardiologist, doctors must complete three years of training in internal medicine following medical school and an additional three years of training in Cardiology.
